FAMILIES DURING THE HOLIDAYS

An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son in New York and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing--45 years of misery is enough." "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son asks. "We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the old man says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts. "I'll take care of this." She calls Phoenix immediately and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing till I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing." The old man hangs up the phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says. "They're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own fares. Now what do we do for Christmas?"

TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

--1 Thessalonians 5:18

As followers of Christ, you and I have an amazing hope in a future spent forever with Him…in a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

And one way we are to respond to this is to live with a grateful heart today…and every day!

You know, a lot of people talk about having an attitude of gratitude. But I believe there’s a longitude and latitude of gratitude as well. Here’s what I mean by that.

If, as the psalmist says, you bless God and praise God and worship God and give thanks for all things, then eternity does not even limit the length and the depth of your blessings!

In the Psalms, the psalmist is up in the heavenlies worshiping God. He’s down in the depths of Shoal worshipping God. He’s on the seas, he’s riding in a cloud, he’s celebrating in the mountains, he’s worshiping in the desert, he’s crying out to God in anguish, even in times of anger, frustration, and disappointment. And he’s crying out to God in times of joy.

His life is made large because every experience in life is an opportunity to give thanks to God.

And when you’re a grateful person, the whole world becomes your sanctuary! Every experience in life is enlarged and elevated when you lift Him up. And as you do, you get lifted up…especially when you’re thankful “in all circumstances”!

Be thankful in every circumstance in which you find yourself.

TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.

--Hebrews 12:28

How are you and I as Christians to respond to the gift of God’s unshakable kingdom? How are we to show Him how thankful we are? By living for eternity here and today.

So how do you do that?

Well, first, you must live with an expectant attitude! You should be living on tiptoes with excitement and anticipation, looking forward to Christ’s return. Because Jesus says in Revelation 22:20 says, “Surely I am coming soon.”

That means suddenly…rapidly…at any time, at any moment. It was my friend Adrian Rogers who said, “We ought to live as though Jesus died yesterday, rose this morning and is coming back this afternoon.”

We ought to get up every day and think, “Lord, perhaps today is the day I see you!” I promise, it will transform your thinking…and it will transform your living when you live with an excited, joyous, expectant attitude.

The reason this kind of thinking transforms our living is because it gives us a new vantage point…a new vision for life and for the future.

This means no matter what happens to you…no matter what you may go through as a believer…you have this reference point. And you have the amazing hope of an eternity with Christ!

live your life in light of eternity and don’t be weighed down by the here and now.

TODAY'S DEVOTIONAL

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

--Proverbs 18:21

More than 90 times in the book of Proverbs, Solomon uses words to describe communication.

We can use our words like medicine to strengthen and soothe those who need it the most…or we can use our words like missiles to destroy and to devour.

That’s why we need to ask ourselves, do our words strengthen and soothe or do they destroy and devour? The words we are to use should impact and influence those around us. These words should encourage and edify…build up, rather than tear down.

Imagine the new sense of joy and excitement in your home and family if you would cut out all the negative and strife-filled words and begin speaking the nourishing words of God!

Remember, the words you speak show what’s really in your heart. And in order to speak those nourishing words of God, you must be connected with Him as your source—the center of your life.

When the Word of God gets in us, we breathe it out, and help those around us. As it says in Proverbs 16:24, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

It is my prayer today that your words will reflect the One who dwells in your heart!

make your words strengthen and soothe…rather than destroy and devour.

THOUGHTS TO LIVE BY

It's up to you.....
